Definitely try and make some time on your next trip. I'm sure we can dredge up a few SD area riders, Stuka being one, OutboardJohn another. Long lives 5 minutes from me so he and I could caravan down to see you and drag Stuka out from under the rock he's been living under.

I was confused. It said "Independents" and yet there on his jacket it said "Harley Davidson?" Nothing says conformity like a Harley Davidson motorcycle. A better shot to illustrate independents would be a VFR passing a procession of Harleys at a high rate of speed.

The guy is pretty much dressed to conform to the HD uniform. A few differences: his gloves have fingers, he doesn't have on chaps. But I'll bet he has on engineer boots, chain drive billfold, a black HD dealership T-shirt, and somewhere on his bike he has a stupid bell.

VFR Owner: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow Harley Davidson, You don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals!

Harley Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!

    VFR Owner You're all different!

Harley Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!

VRod Owner in the crowd: I'm not...

Harley Crowd ( turns on VRod owner ) : Shhh!

You guys are nuts. A dood succesfully out ran the mounties last month by driving a Sportster through a Walmart and down an escalator, out the back to a footpath. Got away, and they still haven't found him.

The bells may be symbolic of buying a Harley in the first place and getting your bell rung.

Now that that's oot of the way WTF are those sillyass "Garfields" are aboot? Then we go to "Snoopys'.

Seen a few HDs with Barbies riding bitch..

All you would catch on a HD would be a fat, stinking, swamp donkey.

I was offended that HD would air a commercial like that and not include in the cast at least one black dude, at least two East Asian dudes, a couple of Muslims, several members of the gay community and at least one transsexual, native Americans , one token Canadian and finally, some chicas with big tits.

A few weeks ago we were having breakfast and discussing possible new bikes we would like to own. Someone brought up the HD 883 Iron and our waitress, who apparently was eavesdropping on our conversation, burst out "DON'T GET A HARLEY. OMG!, Don't get a Harley. Harley's are so loud and ugly. Get a sport bike!, they are way more sexy". She then looks at my friend and says, "You don't even look the part. You don't have beard, you're not fat, your not all scummy looking!" She was left a healthy tip when breakfast was over!

She was actually pretty cute and had a decent pair. Definitely not "HD bitch" material!

I agree that it does not appeal to me to buy an image. Making your own image is the original thing to do. A person will build an image even without trying to, just by riding a bike on a regular basis. To be yourself is the thing, imitation is not needed.

When it comes to Harley Davidson, their machines and the whole "cult" around this, I can see good as well as negative points. This is a shortlist of my personal taking on this.

    1. The name is legend, this is one proud story to tell - except for some periods when the company was badly run and without a vision. This happened more than once in their history.

    2. The Harley sound has been improved by the Harley Sound Lab, which is impressive. I must admit the sound is great and more than that in the bigger machines. The unique Harley sound is based on their own approach to ignition technology.

    3. A motorcycle with a reverse gear is not a motorcycle IMO but a modified car on two wheels.

    4. Harley has done much for spreading interest in motorcycles which is positive.

    5. Where would the Hell's Angels, The Outlaws and some others be without their Harleys?

    6. Some bikes or most of them even look great, Night Rod, Fatboy, Sportster. Supreme sound, too.

    7. I have owned a few Hondas and one Suzuki in my time. I used to be a trail biker but changed into a street biker. However, being a Honda man did not make me forget other brands.

    8. I am glad that I am into Honda motorcycles since I understand that Harleys need more maintenance. As I am up to neck in maintenance anyhow, I probably could not handle more.

    9. I may get a Harley in the future if the opportunity is there. However, I will never give up on my Hondas.

So, that was my contribution to this thread for now.
