I used to, until I realized that was a waste of energy and emotion.

But I can still say I dislike the fuck out of most of them, and most of their jockeys...

 

My beef with Harley Davidson has to do with style more than anything. I will admit to finding 1930s style bike, beautiful. The lines that were achieved with a hard tail suspension were simple and elegant. Big, high torque, slow turning motors ruled the rural back roads and helmets were optional because they were not much protection anyway. Fast forward into the new millennia. Harley Davidson is performing engineering magic to keep 1930 technology viable in today's market. The true believer crows about "real motorcycles" and rides as if the war just ended and America is the only nation on earth. There is more than a bit of xenophobia in the Harley Mystique. It smacks of mechanical bigotry with a nationalistic core. All this flies in the face of actual motorcycle development that has seen marvelous contributions to the sport from Britain, Japan, Italy and more. Rear suspension replaced the hard tail. Telescopic forks replaced the springier front end and plain bearing cranks replaced the knife and fork roller bearing bottom end for greater engine speeds and greater reliability. These developments are just a beautiful as their predecessors. To miss these developments and to lambaste them because of a devotion to an ideal is just sad.

I don't hate Harleys, they have 2 wheels. The company makes a lot more money marketing their Chinese merchandise than they do on bikes. Its the snobbery from a lot of their owners that is a pain in the ass. Some 45 year old squid that has never owned a bike or has not been in the saddle for 30 years thinks hes a bike god on his 30k "baby". Towing or shipping their bikes to Stergis to get the T shirt to wear at bike night or even better Daytona. Some guys I know (Harley riders) asked if I'm going to Daytona. I said I use to go to the races, asked if they were going to watch the races and I got blank stares. They don't even know who Scott Russel is much less what a Daytona race is. Its the "look at me" affair at Daytona now and I steer clear of that madness. If I was close I might fight the traffic and watch the 200. It use to be a really cool race weekend there.

 

When I was a kid I always wanted to go to speed week but not anymore. I have no desire to cruise slowly with thousands of Harleys. It looks wicked boring.

I just got through reading an article about Harley and the Nova project. It was all wrapped up in development, direction, AMF and of course funding. Harley chose to stick with it's traditional market and develop the Evo engine which was smart at the time. They did manage to get out from under AMF but at a cost. It was a very interesting read.
