This is exactly why I ride. Demands total concentration if you are going to successfully manage all the risks involved. I spent 25 years driving racecars of all types and retired in 2006. Found myself aging quickly and losing my "edge" (whatever that is) At 64 I replaced my Yellow Y2K VFR I sold many years ago with an exact duplicate. Back to riding again and finding the "edge" returning. Complacency on a motorcycle will get you killed, concentrating as though it is a race car will keep you sharp and safe. (mostly)

Speaking of, I couldn't help notice post # 74 kinda like hits home a bit. all though as sad as it is, it still doesn't stop me, it did slow me down a bit from that last WTF moment, but the alluring freedom of motorcycling is what it's all about, vfrooommm

My brother was a road racer. He died of cancer, way too early.

I ride because most folks in my hood drive their cages to WalMart. I like to be different.

Because that's what my head tells me to do and that's just what I like to do. Any other reasons needed?

Reminds of of a "friend" a few years ago that chastised me for riding what he called "murder-cycles". He was on the fence as far as being a friend so I just went ahead and ended it. I told him "if you feel so compelled to question my judgement and disrespect me that blatantly in front of other people, then you must be God yourself but I don't really believe you are." I then stood up in a group of 40 people and said, "we are no longer friends". I then walked out and that's the last time I tortured myself with his unctuous presence. He never did "get it" but the rest of them did. Some people simply can't be lived around. I just accept that and distance myself from them. Morale: don't ask me stupid questions and look within first.

When I was getting my motorcycle endorsement at the DMV, the agent behind the counter asked me if I wanted to be an organ donor because "After all, you're riding motorcycles now..." while looking down her nose at me. I just smiled and ignored her.

When family members found out I was getting a bike, all were equally quick to voice their disapproval. Everyone has a story about someone that's wrecked. Why do I ride? Because I've found it to be very freeing, and I feel like I'm at one with myself when on 2 wheels. I am determined to live my life to the fullest. I don't ever want to be the guy sitting at home on the couch or in bed, dying of "nothing".

It's a passion for me ... no different than asking me "why do you breathe?".

The first thing I thought of while flat on my back waiting for EMTs to arrive from my semi-truck head-on wasn't about my health, it was "Am I going to be able to ride again? I have to ride."

People still think I'm nuts that I'm still riding and that it didn't really phase me. They couldn't believe I'd get back on another bike, never mind only about 2 weeks after the accident ...

I just shrug and tell them that I could be hit crossing the street on foot. I'm not going to live my life in fear - I'm going to live it to the fullest, and that means following my passions.

I was in a bad mood the last time I was asked why do you ride isn't it dangerous? in a serious tone I said " its the only socially acceptable form of suicide." Stomped the breaks on that conversation and put it right threw the window.

Same with jumping-until you pull, suicide is in essence what you've done.
