Installation of an Electronic Cruise Control

This article was written by Dez Rae and he has graciously allowed me to post it here. The original post was on the VFR List and thereafter Dez modified it for the Texas VFR Garage. Should be a great help to those who are considering the same modification.
As Dez was saying ... I have had quite a few people ask me about the electronic cruise control for my bike and wanted to know about the installation. Well, I started the installation yesterday morning about 10 am and I had it fully installed and operational by 4 pm and that included my beer and lunch consumption as well.

The electronic cruise control looks like a rather large task when I first opened from the box. But I assure you all it is easy. The hardest part of fitting the cruise control is running the cable from the vacuum through to the throttle linkage. After a while of getting no where with it, I decided to thread a shoe lace through first which attached the cable to the lace. Much easier.

There is a small vacuum pump that gets mounted just in front of the oil cleaner, but it does not have to be removed to replace the oil cleaner. There is also the cruise control switch and it gets mounted under the clutch bracket. This bracket needs to have about 1 millimeter of metal drilled from it to make it fit. There are also 2 computers to be mounted. The biggest of these is no bigger than a packet of smokes. They are mounted under the fairing on the right side of the bike under the seat (hope that made sense). One of the 2 computers is a clutch sensor and will pickup when the clutch is pulled in and the bike picks up revs. When this happens, the cruise control will disconnect. The 2nd computer keeps the bike at a constant speed.

I had a few small questions about the installation and I spoke to Frank from MCCruise and he was extremely helpful. I might also add he even made himself available for me to call on Easter Friday. Top service. The instructions that come with the cruise control are pretty darn good too with a ton of photos to boot.

Who can install this unit? Well, I am just a computer technician with a bit of mechanical knowledge and I certainly ain't no mechanical engineer or motor mechanic and I managed to fit it and it worked perfect. Bonus!

I reckon this unit is worth its weight in gold mainly because of its safety features built in. For example, when either brake is applied, the unit will disconnect. Pop the clutch, it disconnects. Brake bulb blows, unit disconnects. Plus a few other features that I cannot remember. Much safer than a throttle lock.
